Try adjusting your sync settings (Sync to audio only is recommended) or your audio buffer settings. It is recommended to use Sync to audio only. Make sure Fast forward is unchecked under emulation and at least one of Sync to audio or Sync to video is checked. I did something and now the game always runs too fast! If all else fails turn on Sync to video and off Sync to audio. Try changing the audio driver in settings. On loading a game I only get a white screen. Paul utilized these ideas in talking about Christ: We can start to see how New Testament authors like St. It connects our bodies and souls as well as ourselves with the created order. And this includes not just inanimate objects like the solar system, but our own bodies and souls. It is the “glue” that holds the created order together. In addition to being creator, in the vein of Heraclitus and the Stoics, the logos is the ordering and governing principle of the universe. Philo had many names for the logos, two of which were “image” and “sight of God.” This was Philo’s way of saying that the logos was as close to God as possible, being like Him in all ways, but yet being distinct. 6 So the Logos is at the same time creature and creator. “ For the Father of the universe has caused him to spring up as the eldest son, whom, in another passage, he calls the first-born and he who is thus born, imitating the ways of his father, has formed such and such species, looking to his archetypal patterns.” 5 ( Conf. 63)Ī confusing point in all of this is that eventually, Philo equates the Logos with the creative power itself. Philo stated that the Logos was the first begotten Son of the uncreated Father: Philo now applies the same to the concept of logos. In post 36, I mentioned how the Stoics developed the concept of “ eternal generation” and applied it to creation. This is obviously a paradox that the logos could be, at the same time, both first born and eternal. But at the same time, since logos was synonymous with God’s transcendent eternal thought, then its generation was eternal. The Logos as the First Born Son of GodĪccording to Philo, the logos had an origin. For Philo, then, the eternal Logos is one and the same with God’s Word. The logos then becomes a manifestation of God’s thinking-acting. Both the Hebrew Word and Greek Logos represented God’s ideas as well as His actions in creation. 3 It is easy to see parallelism between God’s Word and the Greek Logos. In the same way, for the Hebrews, God’s utterance or His Word was a part of His inscrutable essence, but when He spoke, His Word affected creation itself, even bringing it into existence (Genesis 1) or “breaking to pieces the cedars of Lebanon” (Psalm 29). There was no such thing as a word that was not accompanied by action unless it were a “stillborn” word. In post 20 on Abraham, I mentioned that to the Hebrews, words and actions were synonymous. Philo saw a parallel between this purely Greek concept and the Hebrew idea of God’s Word or utterance as found in the Hebrew Scriptures. In the previous post, I mentioned that the logos represented both the idea of God’s inscrutable essence – His divine mind – and the manifestation of God’s existence in creation. In order to bridge the Hebrew and Greek world, he introduced the Greek concept of logos conceived by Heraclitus and the Stoics into Judaism. 2 And his logos was the intermediary between the two. Philo of Alexandria’s Concept of Logos and God’s Wordīy attempting to bridge Hebrew and Greek thinking, Philo laid the foundation for Christian theology and philosophy. Koine Greek reflected God – it was at the same time a transcendent and an immanent language. But at the same time, the same philosophical terms found in classical Greek were also found in Koine Greek. 1 It replaced the older Attic Greek or Classical Greek and was spoken widely throughout the world. Koine (κοινή) Greek was “street Greek,” the parlance of the common person. Paradoxically, the type of Greek in which the New Testament was written was Koine Greek. And thus it leant itself to eventually being used by the Church fathers to develop Christian theology. It came loaded with philosophical terms and ideas that the Greeks had been developing for over 400 years. It is no accident that the New Testament was written in Greek. (Please see the previous post as background for this one.) Greek as the Bridge Between Judaism and Christianity This made the idea of the logos so significant that, I would argue, it was the only word John could have used in chapter 1 of his Gospel. In this post, I will discuss how Philo of Alexandria put Hebrew flesh and bone on the Greek abstract concept of logos. Good sentence starters for sequences or lists When you’re writing a conclusion, remember that sentence starters can cue the reader that you’re about to “wrap things up” so they don’t expect any new points or evidence. Topic sentences are like the sentence starters of an entire essay-they introduce what the paragraph or entire text is about so the readers know what to expect.Ĭonclusions and summaries always act a little differently than other sentences and paragraphs because they don’t present new information. If something seems off, jarring, or missing, try adding one to see if it helps.īelow you’ll find examples of sentence starters relevant to specific contexts. If your sentences flow together nicely, you don’t need sentence starters. If you’re having trouble deciding, try rereading your last few lines and see how they sound. There’s no hard rule for when to use sentence starters and when to avoid them. The sentence requires certain context, such as background information. You want to write a hook to captivate readers. You want to add emphasis to a particular sentence or point. You’re presenting a conclusion or summary, for instance at the end of an essay. You’re introducing a new idea, such as at the beginning of an essay or of a paragraph. It’s unclear how one sentence is connected to others. Here are some situations where a sentence starter works best: In fact, using them too much can distract your reader. Sentence starters are not necessary for every sentence. In other words, if you think nonfiction is dry, imagine if it were merely a list of facts! When to use sentence starters While fiction unifies the writing through the narrative, nonfiction often incorporates a variety of facts, which sentence starters coalesce for the reader. Paragraph starters fulfill that same role, typically providing an organizational signpost via introduction sentence starters to bridge the gap between the previous and current topics.Īlthough they’re common in fiction, sentence starters are most useful for nonfiction, in particular essay writing. That principle also applies to paragraphs, which jump from topic to topic. Sentence starters help ease the process for the reader by smoothing over jarring transitions and preparing the reader for the next topic. Because each sentence essentially has its own individual topic, these writings frequently jump from point to point, sometimes abruptly. In longer academic writing texts, sentence starters are essential for unifying the entire work. The words that start a sentence are some of the most important in writing: They introduce what the sentence is about so the reader knows what to expect. On July 2, 1921, the Jack Dempsey-George Carpentier boxing match was the first broadcast live on radio. 1921: A Year of Firsts in Radio Broadcasting “Was he nervous? How much preparation did he do? How detailed was his description of the game, if at all? How often did he give the score? Did he even consider things like personality, humor, or style? Probably not.” No tape of the first broadcast exists, so no one knows. “Let’s think about Harold Arlin and that first broadcast,” wrote Pat Hughes, longtime play-by-play man for the Chicago Cubs and a student of broadcast history. He had no commercials to break up the action. He couldn’t banter with some wisecracking color commentator. With mystified fans sitting around him in the stands, Arlin delivered a description of the game into his mushiphone.Īrlin had never listened to a baseball game on the radio. The game that day was between the host Pittsburgh Pirates and the visiting Philadelphia Phillies. KDKA distributed radios to employees’ friends and families, simply to create a potential audience. Technicians concocted a microphone from a telephone–the “mushiphone” looked like a mushroom or a tomato can with a felt lining. Nevertheless, the station decided to give it a try, a “one-off” broadcast just to see how it would go. By 1924, there were more than 500.īut for a time, Arlin and KDKA had the field largely to themselves, and they attempted to plough as much of it as they could. Harding had defeated James Cox. There were five licensed radio stations in the United States in 1921. About five hundred listeners, a Pittsburgh newspaper later reported, learned that Warren G. The years after the end of World War I in 1918 unleashed a flood of talent and innovation onto the public airwaves. In 1920, KDKA in Pittsburgh was the first radio station to broadcast presidential election results. KDKA Broadcasts 1920 Presidential Election Results With that kind of audience potential, the station needed to get creative with its programming. Within a few years, Arlin was described by the Times of London as the “best-known American voice in England.” KDKA’s signal reached all the way across the Atlantic. His audience was a small group of shortwave radio enthusiasts who tuned into the Westinghouse Company's KDKA in Pittsburgh-the first commercial radio station in the United States.Ī 25-year-old electrical engineer for Westinghouse, Arlin checked out the new radio setup out of curiosity, he told the Mansfield (Ohio) News-Journal in an interview in 1981. After hearing Arlin’s rich voice, the powers that be talked him into going on air. His Kitty Hawk was a box seat behind home plate at Pittsburgh’s Forbes Field. With no Orville doing color commentary, he sat behind a makeshift mic in the summer of 1921 and delivered the first radio play-by-play. Every big-league city has had its own play-by-play icon, with some becoming national figures: Vin Scully (Los Angeles Dodgers), Red Barber (Cincinnati Reds, Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Yankees), Mel Allen (New York Yankees), Harry Caray (Chicago Cubs), Harry Kalas (Philadelphia Phillies), and Jack and Joe Buck (St. Legends have sat behind microphones and developed a rich tradition of baseball broadcasting ever since.
